This week’s Between Shows is “Boardwalk Empire,” which returns to HBO this Sunday for its third season. Our favorite thing about the Atlantic City-set Prohibition drama is its cast, which is headed by Steve Buscemi (above) and features a bevy of New York stage actors.
In the first two seasons, we were treated to Tony Nominee Michael Stuhlbarg (The Pillowman) as real-life Jewish mafioso Arnold Rothstein (a role he continues to play this season) and Paul Sparks (MTC’s Pumpgirl , Atlantic Theatre Company’s Dusk Rings A Bell) as Irish bootlegger Mickey Doyle.
This season we’re most looking forward to seeing two very busy, very tall actors on the show: Michael Shannon and Bobby Cannavale. Shannon, who plays zealous federal agent Nelson Van Alden, returns to “Boardwalk” hot off a sold-out run of Uncle Vanya at Soho Rep. Simultaneously, the Academy Award nominee will be making his Broadway debut in Grace, opposite Paul Rudd and Ed Asner.
We had the pleasure of working with Bobby Cannavale on The Motherf**ker with the Hat and we can’t wait to see him sink his teeth into the villainous role of Italian gangster Gyp Rosetti. Cannavale will also be returning to Broadway this season in not one but TWO play revivals. This fall, he stars as Ricky Roma in Glengarry Glen Ross, then we’ll be working with him again on the Roundabout’s revival of Clifford Odets’ The Big Knife in the spring.
Meet Gyp Rosetti in the trailer below, then tune into HBO on Sunday, September 16th at 9 pm for Season 3 of “Boardwalk Empire!”
