Broadway’s boffo economic impact
Crains New york Business – by KEN M. CHRISTENSEN

Broadway’s economic impact on New York City is growing, according to the newest two-year report by the Broadway League, a trade organization.

The industry contributed more than $11 billion to the local economy in 2010 and 2011. That figure includes direct spending by producers, theater owners and tourists, as well as the indirect ripple effects that their spending had throughout the city. The measured impact was a 9% rise from the previous report, for 2008 and 2009, according to the association.

“The increase in the number of tourists who were drawn to the city because of Broadway directly was the most important driver in the growth of jobs supported by our industry,” said Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of the Broadway League, in a statement. –

Broadway’s prominent role in the tourism industry goes back to start of the “I Love New York” campaign of the late 1970s, Mr. Wachtel said.

While the industry’s most popular shows, like Jersey Boys and Wicked, have traveled to other cities, recent studies continue to show that Broadway is the No. 1 tourist draw in New York City, he said.

“There’s something special about Broadway being identified with New York,” he said.
