Musical of Charlie Chaplin heading to Broadway
AP – by Mark Kennedy

A funny guy with a cane, a hat and an unforgettable mustache is heading to Broadway.

Producers announced Thursday that a new musical depicting the life of Charlie Chaplin will begin performances later this summer at the Barrymore Theatre. Previews begin Aug. 21 with an opening set for Sept. 10.

“Chaplin” has music and lyrics by Christopher Curtis, a pianist who wrote the theme song to the film “The Break” starring Martin Sheen, the theme song for the TV show “A Wedding Story” and has performed with such artists as Stevie Wonder. Curtis co-wrote the book with Thomas Meehan, a Tony Award winner who helped pen “The Producers,” ”Annie” and “Hairspray.”

Warren Carlyle, who directed and choreographed “Hugh Jackman: Back on Broadway” and choreographed the revival of “Follies” this season, will direct and choreograph.

Colin Myler’s ‘Daily News’ is working on a new national site, ‘Daily News America’
Capital New York – by JOE POMPEO

Daily News editor Colin Myler recently hinted that the paper’s “online operation” would soon be expanding its national footprint under the direction of incoming web editor Ted Young.

That seems to jibe with a new project in development at 4 New York Plaza: Sources tell Capital the tabloid is working on a digital offering called Daily News America.

A U.S. news site would capitalize on the types of click-friendly national stories, picture galleries and celebrity news that have become standard fare on nydailynews.com over the past year or so, and could help the News maintain or expand the already comfortable gulf between its monthly traffic totals and those of archnemesis the New York Post. NYDailyNews.com had 10.2 million unique visitors in April, up from 9.9 million a year earlier, to nypost.com’s 6.6 million, up from 5.03 million, according to comScore.

Daily News America would also seem to present a potential synergy with another publication in News owner Mort Zuckerman’s media stable: U.S. News & World Report, which went online-only in late 2010.
