Priscilla’s Oscar Winning Designers React to Tony Nomination

It was announced this morning that PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT THE MUSICAL costume designers Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner, who won an Oscar for the film, have been nominated for Tony and Drama Desk awards for their new stage designs.  They weren’t in New York to hear today’s award announcements, but are sharing their reactions from abroad:

Lizzy Gardiner: “When I heard that I’d been nominated this morning, I cried for many different reasons. It has been one hell of a journey in so many ways. I was a kid when I won an Oscar for our costume designs for the Priscilla film. Cut to 16 years later and I get a nomination for a Tony Award for the stage musical! This has never happened before. I’m incredibly proud of Tim’s and my work. Such an incredible honor for the recognition. Priscilla has been a gift, beautifully wrapped from Stephan Elliott for the past 16 years. This nomination is for the entire company!”

Tim Chappel: “Of all the places I’ve worked in the world I found New York to be the most generous and embracing. It’s a place of incredible creativity so to be included in the Tony nominations is a tremendous honor. Thanks Broadway and thank you Tony Awards. I can’t wait to get back.”
