Kate Shindle, who stars as The Mad Hatter in Broadway’s WONDERLAND, now in previews at the Marquis Theatre, is featured in the Star Ledger:
A Role to Hang Her Hat On
By Ronni Reich, The Star Ledger
The White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts and an inquisitive caterpillar are all in attendance.
But “Wonderland,” a new Broadway musical, is not your usual Alice story — just ask the Mad Hatter.
“It’s the best of both worlds,” says Kate Shindle, 34, a New Jersey native and former Miss America who plays “Her Royal Hattress.”
“The story is familiar, but it’s being told in a completely different way.”
In “Wonderland,” in addition to the Hatter’s gender switch — and Shindle will explain the reason for that — Alice is no longer an 8-year-old girl, but instead, a working mother on the brink of divorce. Her fantasy world becomes a place not only for otherworldly tea parties but also for self-discovery.
“It’s really about a woman who has lost her joy and the journey down the rabbit hole is about finding that again,” Shindle says. “It’s an important lesson for people of many ages, and in a lot of ways, more relevant than the original.”
